- Charles Fort, Kinsale -

Just outside Kinsale is Charles Fort, one of the finest examples of 17th century military technology in the world. It was never attacked from the sea, but unfortunately has a 100% failure rate, as the one time it was attacked, in 1690 by William Robinson on the land side, it was eventually occupied after the ramparts were breached. In the 18th century, if a resident soldier cursed on a Sunday, a hot iron was applied to his tongue as punishment.
