This is a "gopura," or an adorned gateway, outside of Sai Baba's ashram in Puttaparthy. With 12 million disciples world-wide, and at only 5 feet tall, Sai Baba is the most popular guru in the world. He is best known for his ability to conjure vibhuti, or sacred ash, out of thin air, which he did for me (he was polite enough to ask me where I'm from first), and I still have some. I was too mesmerized with looking into his blissed-out eyes to watch his hands to see if he was pulling a fast one. You're not allowed to take pictures of Sai Baba. This gopura is the inspiration behind the color scheme for my painting "Untitled #2." In India, they have color usage figured out in a way we in the West haven't yet clued into.
